Install KEYFRAMR

Your download is two files: the KEYFRAMR .zxp file, which is what you install, and this guide as a PDF. There is nothing to unzip. If your browser says the .zxp is not commonly downloaded, choose Keep: it is an After Effects extension file, which most browsers rarely see.

How to install

  1. Get your download

    Download the KEYFRAMR .zxp file from your purchase email. Your licence key is in the same email. Don't double-click the .zxp: nothing happens, and that is normal. The installer in the next step opens it.

  2. Get the free installer

    After Effects can't install extensions by itself, so you use the free ZXP/UXP Installer from aescripts. You only get it once.

  3. Install KEYFRAMR

    Quit After Effects. Open the installer, drag the KEYFRAMR .zxp file into its window and wait until it says it is done.

  4. Restart After Effects

    Quit it fully with Cmd+QClose it fully with File › Exit, then open it again. After Effects only looks for new extensions when it starts.

  5. Allow scripts

    Open After Effects › Settings (Preferences in older versions) › Scripting & ExpressionsEdit › Preferences › Scripting & Expressions, tick Allow Scripts to Write Files and Access Network and press OK. A fresh After Effects has it off, and KEYFRAMR needs it to save files.

  6. Open KEYFRAMR

    Choose Window › Extensions › KEYFRAMR. Dock the panel where you want it.

  7. Switch it on

    Paste the licence key from your purchase email and press Switch on. Once per computer: updates switch on by themselves.

  8. Set up KEYConsole

    In KEYFRAMR's Settings (the gear), switch on KEYConsole on this Mac, then quit and reopen After Effects once.

    In KEYFRAMR's Settings (the gear), press Set Up the Key (Control+Space) and follow its three steps.

    Then press Control+Space anywhere in After Effects, type an effect or preset and press Enter.

Your presets

KEYFRAMR shows After Effects' presets and your User Presets folder. Keep yours elsewhere? Settings › Custom preset folder › Browse.

MP4 export

TOOLKIT › Project › Render & Re-encode. If it asks, press Install FFmpeg once (about 30 MB on Mac, 110 MB on Windows). If After Effects is blocked from the internet (by a firewall), the button cannot download it: allow After Effects through the firewall, or install FFmpeg yourself in Terminal (on a Mac with Homebrew, brew install ffmpeg) (on Windows, winget install ffmpeg). KEYFRAMR finds it the next time you press Render & Convert to MP4.

Updates

Free, with the same licence key. Download the new version from your purchase email and install it the same way.

KEYConsole

The keys

On Windows, read Ctrl for Cmd and Alt for Option.

  • Control+SpaceOpen or close
  • EnterApply. Shift+Enter keeps it open, Esc closes
  • 1 to 9, 0Apply a shortcut while nothing is typed
  • Shift+Option+1 to 0Save the row as that shortcut
  • Cmd+Option+EnterApply on a new adjustment layer

Having trouble?

Is my copy genuine?

Genuine KEYFRAMR only comes from Payhip or b3nedits.com and always asks for your Payhip licence key when you switch it on. If a copy does not ask, it is not genuine: delete it.

My Mac won't open the installer

That warning is about the ZXP/UXP Installer, not KEYFRAMR. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security, scroll down to Security and press Open Anyway next to the installer. Then open it again.

Windows says "Windows protected your PC"

That warning is about the ZXP/UXP Installer, not KEYFRAMR. Press More info, then Run anyway.

The installer could not write the files

Close it, right-click it, choose Run as administrator and drag the .zxp in again.

KEYFRAMR is not in Window › Extensions

After Effects was probably still open during the install. Quit it fully with Cmd+QClose it fully with File › Exit and open it again. Still missing? Install it by hand.

Install it by hand
  1. Quit After Effects.
  2. Rename the .zxp to .zip and unzip it. Inside you should see CSXS and index.html. Name that folder KEYFRAMR.
  3. Move it into this folder (make extensions if it is missing):

    ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CEP/extensions/
    Finder › Go › Go to Folder, then paste.

    %APPDATA%\Adobe\CEP\extensions\
    Paste into File Explorer's address bar.

  4. Open After Effects.
Control+Space does nothing

macOS uses Control+Space to switch keyboard language. Turn it off in System Settings › Keyboard › Keyboard Shortcuts › Input Sources ("Select the previous input source"). The KEYConsole key can't be changed on a Mac.

After Effects is blocked from the internet

Under Switch on, press No Internet in After Effects? Use Your Browser and follow its two steps. After that, KEYFRAMR works offline. When it is online, it checks about once a day that your purchase is still active.

Moving to a new computer

One purchase is for one computer. Message b3n on the Discord to move it.

What it needs
  • After Effects 2020 or newer. Auto Tracker and Background Remover need 2022 or newer, Scene Cut 22.3 or newer.
  • KEYConsole on a Mac: macOS 10.14 or newer (Intel), 11 or newer (Apple Silicon). Install FFmpeg on Windows: Windows 10 or newer.
  • The download is 216 MB. Internet only to switch on and to install FFmpeg. The Auto Tracker and Background Remover models run on your computer.
Remove KEYFRAMR
  1. First switch KEYConsole off: Settings › KEYConsole on this Mac, off.
  2. Quit After Effects.
  3. Remove it with the installer you used, or delete its folder from the extensions folder.

A dead "KEYConsole (borderless)" item left in the Window menu? Quit After Effects and delete KEYConsole.plugin from:
~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/Plug-ins/7.0/MediaCore/

You can also delete its two data folders, Haste and KEYFRAMES, in ~/Library/Application Support%APPDATA%.
